The Brother

About this film

This project started when I was in an artist residency in New Orleans, Louisiana (US). I gave a film workshop in a community center for a small group of teenage girls. There, I met and became close to Clay'jel, Alania and Keira. I wrote a short fictional script for them. With a documentary approach, I created a fictional and poetic portrait of the sisters.

The Brother follows three sisters exploring loneliness and loss in New Orleans, a city in reconstruction, also processing loss. I was moved by the presence of mourning in New Orleans and by what Clay'jel, Alania and Keira went through in their daily lives. They came from a community surrounded by violence, injustice, and the all-too-frequent deaths. It could be their brother, their father, their uncle who did not come home ... The brother could easily be someone missing in their lives.
